The Starting Gate. That’s the name of the book I’m working on. It’s sort of a memoir, but more of a rumination. It’s about drinking. It’s about working. It’s about trying to get right what I should be doing, now that I’ve retired from what kept me from going crazy for the last 25 years.
Chapter Four, “White Boy Can Take a Punch” examines the time in my life when I found myself the only white kid on a labor crew at the National Archives. I first wrote out this story as a short play for a night of plays dedicated to Trayvon Martin called Hoodies Up! I am grateful for the opportunities that theatre has offered me to tell stories and I hope to honor that debt with this new work.
So come on out if you’re willing to lend a hand, and in exchange for your feedback, I’ll try to offer you a fun story or two in return.
